Cammachmore’s Kyle Reid has no regrets about hanging up his gloves and believes his new role in scoring goals is an extra motivation to win silverware with the club.
The former Inverurie Loco’s first team stopper admits his new position was for a “bit of fun” but believes his goals can help the Kincardineshire side gain promotion to Division One this season.
Reid, who played alongside Peterhead’s Paul Jarvie during his spell with Loco’s, admits work commitments was the main reason for his move to amateur football.
He said: “Working offshore meant it was hard to concentrate on my football so playing for Cammachmore in the amateur leagues was ideal for me.
“My five years at Inverurie were great but it’s good to be able to balance football with work and to meet and play with your friends on a Saturday.
“The lads suggested that I should play in a centre-forward role, rather than be a goalkeeper for the club and so far it seems to be paying off.”
Reid, who also played for junior champions Hermes, admits he misses Highland League and junior football.
He said: “I miss the competition of playing for those teams but work has to come first.
“It’s brilliant to get a game of football without taking it too seriously”.
“This is the only game where I haven’t scored since joining Cammachmore but overall it’s been very enjoyable.”
Cammachmore manager Justin Leslie hopes the club can follow in the footsteps of neighbours Newtonhill and Johnshaven Athletic.
Leslie believes he has a side worthy of a place in Division One next season.
He said: “It’s great to see so many teams from Kincardineshire and the surrounding area doing well in the leagues and we believe we can be a part of this.
“We have brought together a good squad of players this season and our last few results show the progress we are making.
“We narrowly missed out on promotion by two points last season so our aim is to get into Division One next season.”
Cammachmore currently sit third in Division Two (East), nine points off Great Northern Athletic in second place, but he is confident his side can reduce the point’s deficit.
He said: “It’s important to keep our squad consistent if we are to challenge for promotion.
“We have a lot of guys who work offshore so we are sometimes forced to make changes for every game.
“Work should always come before football but it can affect morale as boys are sometimes dropped to the bench to accommodate others who have come home from offshore.”
Cammachmore opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Jordan Gray latched onto Shaun Simpson’s low pass to side-foot the ball past Kevin Cruickshank.
David Barrie almost inspired a Burghmuir reply but his fierce drive brushed the side of the post.
The Kincardinshire side made it 2-0 on 20 minutes when Danny Hadingham calmly rounded Cruickshank to slot the ball into the empty net.
Burghmuir refused to be discouraged and continued to probe patiently when Richard Gove had to palm Colin Watt’s powerful shot round the post.
Cammachmore added a third goal on 30 minutes when Stuart Gray tapped the ball across the line after Cruickshank misjudged Craig Edmonstone’s high ball into the box.
Kyle Reid then showed why he made the switch to play outfield when Cruickshank brought down the centre-forward, leaving Jordan Gray to convert the ball into the right corner of the net.

Much of Cammachmore’s potency came from Shaun Simpson who made it 5-0 on 50 minutes. Gray squared the ball to the attacker who rifled a shot into the top corner of the net from 20 yards.
Jordan Gray then made it 6-0 on 65 minutes, converting from 10 yards, following substitute Calum Grant’s cutback.
Burghmuir conceded two sloppy goals before the full-time whistle. Neil McDonald’s shot squirmed past Cruickshank at his near post before substitute Kris Anderson curled his shot into the top corner of the net to round off a memorable performance for the Kincardineshire side.
