Trophies International 1 – 3 West End

Report by Andy McLaren

West End captain Martin Johnston today called on rival teams to chase his side to the top of Division Two (East).

The Aberdeen outfit comfortably defeated Trophies International 3-1 to move two points clear at the top of the table.

West End suffered their first relegation in four years by losing to Don Athletic in a relegation play-off last term.

The Aberdeen side have added new players from Junior clubs such as Ellon United, Stoneywood and Bridge of Don Thistle.

Martin, 31, believes his side can overcome last season’s disappointment by gaining promotion.

He said: “We regularly have almost 20 guys attending training which is very positive.

“I have been here for three years now and I have loved every second of it.

“It was a huge blow to lose the play-off last season.

“This result means we are top and we must not let teams catch us.”

West End made the perfect start when Michael COCKER’s audacious shot from 20 yards looped over Anthony Digby.

The Division Two (East) leaders made it 2-0 when Sean COWLING capitalised on a mix up in defence minutes before half-time.

Half-time: 0 – 2

Trophies International gained in confidence and almost grabbed a goal back, but Jacob Bonner misjudged his header from five yards.

The Balmedie side deservedly made it 2-1 after Alvin WONG’s low drive flashed past Darren Gilbert.

West End sealed the three points when Aiden GREIG’s cross deceived Digby and flew into the net.
