Fosters Centenary Scottish Amateur Cup 3rd Round at Hazlehead Academy on Saturday 1st November

Division Three Hilton gave Division One (East) Hazlehead Utd a hard game on a very heavy pitch and go through to the next round of the competition.

The newcomers to the Association took control of the game from the start and were first to attack when a long pass from Campbell found Fraser whose shot went past the post. Hilton were pushing forward but their moves were breaking down in the last third of the pitch. Hazlehead were struggling in defence and were forced to repeatedly put the ball out for throw ins and from one long throw in from Campbell, Stuart’s header was pushed over the bar by keeper Fraser for a corner.

In seventeen minutes Hilton’s keeper Cowie had to run off his line to challenge Hazlehead’s Emslie whose shot went wide of the post. Hilton’s Stuart put his team ahead in twenty one minutes when a deep cross from the left fell to his right foot and he gave keeper Fraser no chance with his drive. 0-1. A minute later Hazlehead were caught out by another long throw from Campbell that gave Fraser a chance but his header hit the cross bar and went out of play.

Hazlehead got a bit of luck when a drive from Milnes rebounded off the post back into play, fell to Sherriffs whose shot was saved by keeper Fraser. In thirty five minutes Hazlehead’s Emslie broke out of his own half, ran thirty yards, hit a great drive but keeper Cowie saved at full stretch to keep his team in front at half time 0-1.

Half-time: 0-1

Hazlehead started the second half with shots at goal but keeper Cowie was in fine form and coped well. In fifty four minutes referee Morrison awarded Hilton an indirect free kick in the Hazlehead penalty box when keeper Fraser picked up the ball from a throw in. After discussion with players of both teams he changed his decision giving the kick to Hazlehead. In fifty eight minutes Hazlehead’s Smith had a great run from the half way line beating two men and passing to Macklin who wasted the opportunity by not hitting the target.

Although Hazlehead were having a good twenty minutes they were leaving themselves open at the back. Hilton took advantage of this and in seventy one minutes from a free kick on the edge of the box Sinclair‘s shot hit the back of the net 0-2. Hazlehead were trying to get back into the game but poor finishing frustrated them and they started to give away needless fouls and Vass was sent off for a heavy tackle from behind on Sherriffs. With five minutes left Hilton’s Johnston sent in a ball to the far post where Rose volleyed the ball past keeper Fraser to make the final score 0-3.
