Division One (East) at Tullos on Saturday 10th January

Torry Utd and Glendale XI are both well placed in Division One (East) for promotion this season. Today’s game saw both field strong teams and a draw was a fair result under the terrible conditions. The pitch was very heavy and a gusting gale force wind was blowing across the pitch.

After a shaky start Glendale XI went ahead in fifteen minutes when Banks received a pass from Campbell and his first time shot hit the back of the net giving keeper Kevin Clark no chance.

Both sets of players were finding it difficult to control and pass the ball on the sticky surface. Glendale XI were having the better of the play with the strong wind assisting them but Torry’s defence stood firm breaking up Glendale XI’s moves in the last third of the pitch.

Just before half time Torry’s Chris Clark had a great chance to level the score. With only the keeper to beat he slipped as he was about to shoot allowing a defender to get back to clear the ball.

Half-time: 0-1

Torry were a different team after the break, slowing the game down they started to find their men with their passes. Torry’s Ross was unlucky when his fierce shot was pushed behind for a corner by keeper Gordon. A shot from Torry’s Innes was palmed out by keeper Gordon as far as Torry’s McDonald who was taken unawares and put his shot past the post.

From a Torry corner the ball was not properly cleared, it bounced around and landed close to the goal line with Torry players claiming a goal but referee Mitchell waved play on. Torry’s next attack saw the ball fired in by Lunn, keeper Gordon could not hold it and Innes ran in to level the score at 1-1.

From a corner at the other end Glendale XI’s Merson tried an overhead kick that flew inches over the bar. Glendale XI were making chances but could not convert them. Torry’s Ross had a chance to put his team ahead but keeper Gordon narrowed the angle and Ross’ shot went wide.

With minutes remaining Glendale XI’s Croll took a goal kick but the strong wind pushed the ball back into the eighteen yard box where Croll again kicked the ball upfield with no other player touching it. This caused controversy between the Torry players and their line who claimed a free kick but referee Mitchell ignored the claims.
